Paul’s questions arise from a delicate situation. Because he has spoken about the sincerity and God-given character of his ministry, some might accuse him of praising himself again. He therefore asks whether he must present letters of recommendation to the Corinthians or obtain such letters from them. The tone is searching rather than defensive. He is not anxious to build a reputation, yet he cannot remain silent when distorted judgments about his ministry threaten to confuse the church about the gospel itself.

The verse does not condemn every proper recommendation. Paul’s words, “as some do,” acknowledge that such letters had a legitimate use. A testimony from trustworthy believers could help a congregation receive a servant it did not know. The difficulty lay in making outward credentials the decisive measure of spiritual authority, especially in Corinth, where the believers already knew Paul, had heard his message, and had come into Christian life through his labor. Requiring him to prove himself to them by documents from elsewhere would ignore the history God had written among them.

Neither does Paul place himself beyond examination. Christian ministry must be tested. Its message, spirit, conduct, and fruit matter deeply. Yet the standard cannot be self-advertisement, impressive claims, or borrowed status. A servant of Christ is not authenticated merely by presenting a polished image. The deeper question is whether Christ is being faithfully proclaimed and whether God is genuinely at work.

There are times when defending one’s ministry would be vanity, and there are times when refusing to answer would abandon people to harmful confusion. Paul walks that narrow path. He does not defend himself because his ego cannot endure criticism. He speaks because the Corinthians need to distinguish between human display and ministry that depends upon God. His questions therefore call every Christian worker to humility.
