After the majestic teaching about resurrection, Paul turns immediately to a practical matter: “the collection for the saints.” Eternal hope does not remove believers from present human need. Because Christ has been raised and the labor of His people is not in vain, ordinary acts of generosity can become part of God’s enduring work. The faith that looks forward to resurrection also opens its hands to suffering brothers and sisters now.

The word “saints” refers to people who belong to God through Christ. Their need does not diminish their dignity. They are not presented as anonymous objects of pity but as members of the same spiritual family. The Corinthians may be separated from them geographically, yet shared belonging to Christ creates a responsibility that reaches beyond the boundaries of one congregation.

Paul had given the churches of Galatia the same instruction. This shows that the collection was not an isolated appeal made only to Corinth. Several congregations were being invited to participate in a common ministry of care. Such giving could strengthen unity among believers from different places and backgrounds. The churches were learning that Christianity was larger than their local concerns. To belong to Christ was also to belong to His people.

The reference to instructions previously given elsewhere also reveals consistency in Paul’s leadership. He is not inventing a special rule for one troubled church. The same principles of generosity and stewardship are being taught throughout the wider fellowship.

The wider correspondence identifies the destination as needy believers in Jerusalem. This relief project joined Gentile congregations to Jewish Christians in a visible confession of one body. The collection was therefore both material mercy and gospel reconciliation, but it was never a payment for spiritual status or a means of purchasing favor from God.
