2 Corinthians 10:1

Paul begins this difficult appeal not by asserting his rank but by placing himself beneath the character of Christ. He pleads “by the meekness and gentleness of Christ.” The manner in which he exercises authority must agree with the Lord whose authority he represents. Jesus’ meekness was not weakness, uncertainty, or fear of opposition. It was strength under holy control—the refusal to answer hostility with pride, cruelty, or revenge. His gentleness did not prevent Him from speaking truth plainly, but it governed how and why He spoke.

Paul therefore does not approach the Corinthians as a wounded leader eager to defend his dignity. Serious questions about his ministry must be addressed, yet personal vindication is not his highest concern. He desires their faithfulness to Christ. Even when firmness becomes necessary, his appeal begins with the Savior’s patient and gracious spirit.

The words about being humble when present and bold when absent appear to echo a criticism directed against him. Some regarded his personal manner among the Corinthians as unimpressive or timid, while finding his letters forceful. Paul does not confirm their interpretation. He acknowledges the accusation without accepting its standard. His gentleness in person should not be mistaken for cowardice, just as his strong written words should not be mistaken for aggression.

His intensely personal opening—“I, Paul”—allows the Corinthians to hear the heart behind the warning. He is not hiding behind a title or sending an impersonal decree. He stands before them as one whose relationship with them matters deeply. His authority is real, but it is not detached from affection.
