Boasting in Weakness

2 Corinthians 11:1

Paul asks the Corinthians to bear with “a little foolishness” from him. He knows that speaking at length about his own credentials, sacrifices, and sufferings can resemble the self-promotion he normally rejects. Christian ministry is not supposed to revolve around a leader defending his greatness. Yet Paul has reached a point where silence would allow deceptive teachers to redefine genuine apostleship, discredit his ministry, and draw the congregation away from Christ.

His boasting is therefore reluctant and pastoral. He is not trying to recover wounded pride or win admiration. He temporarily speaks in the language his opponents value so that he can expose how empty their standards are. They boast in outward impressiveness, authority, and human distinction. Paul will answer them, but he will eventually boast about experiences that reveal weakness rather than worldly grandeur.

The repeated plea, “bear with me,” shows that he understands how unusual his approach sounds. He wants the Corinthians to listen patiently while he makes a defense he would rather not have to make. His personal credibility matters because the gospel he preached is being challenged. If the congregation concludes that Paul is false while accepting teachers who proclaim another message, their relationship with Christ is endangered.

There are occasions when humility requires silence, but there are also occasions when humility requires honest explanation. Refusing to defend oneself can appear noble, yet it may become irresponsible when others are harmed by the falsehood. Paul is willing to appear foolish for a moment because he loves the church more than he dislikes speaking about himself.
