Paul continues the “foolish” boasting forced upon him by Corinth’s distorted standards, but he immediately says that it is not profitable. Self-exaltation cannot establish apostolic truth. He turns to “visions and revelations of the Lord” only because remarkable experiences had become part of the rival teachers’ claim to authority.

The final phrase governs the subject. A revelation comes from the Lord and belongs to His purpose; it is not a spiritual achievement owned by the recipient. Paul neither advertises a technique nor treats access to hidden things as a rank above ordinary believers.

His restraint prepares the movement of the whole passage. The heavenly experience will be narrated indirectly, with admitted uncertainty and long-kept silence. It will then give way to the thorn and to Christ’s word about sufficient grace. Even the credential most likely to impress Corinth becomes another path toward acknowledged weakness.

The passage therefore asks the church to judge extraordinary claims by the Lord who gives them, the gospel they serve, and the character they produce. Spectacle is never self-authenticating. Paul’s vision matters because Christ remains central when the vision is told.
