The words “therefore” and “this ministry” carry forward the glory of the new-covenant ministry described in the preceding chapter. Paul has been entrusted with a message through which the Spirit gives life, removes the veil, and transforms those who behold the glory of the Lord. Yet he does not speak as though he had earned this calling or made himself worthy of it. He has received ministry in the same way that he has received mercy—as an undeserved gift from God.

That understanding keeps him from losing heart. Paul’s perseverance does not arise from confidence in his personality, abilities, reputation, or visible success. He knows that the ministry belongs to God before it belongs to him. He is a recipient before he is a messenger, a man shown mercy before he is a servant commissioned to speak. Whenever the burden becomes heavy, he can look beyond himself to the mercy that first called him and continues to sustain him.

To say that Paul does not lose heart does not mean that he never experiences sorrow, exhaustion, fear, or discouragement. The chapter will soon reveal how intensely he is pressed, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down. His courage is not emotional invulnerability. It is the settled refusal to abandon the calling God has graciously entrusted to him. He may feel the weight of ministry, but he does not conclude that the weight is meaningless or that God has forsaken him.

The same mercy that gives the calling also supplies strength for the calling. He does not endure because he considers himself unusually strong. He endures because the God who showed mercy remains faithful. When our own strength is thin, remembering that service began with grace can keep us from despair. We do not have to manufacture the power to carry God’s work.
