Paul’s decision grows directly out of his statement that he delayed his return in order to spare the Corinthians. “I determined” describes a deliberate judgment, not a careless change of mood. He had no desire to make another visit dominated by sorrow. The wording points to an earlier encounter that had been painful for Paul and for the congregation, and he recognized that returning immediately could deepen the wound rather than heal it.

The phrase “in sorrow” reveals how deeply ministry and relationship were joined in his heart. He could not enter Corinth as a detached official who delivered correction without being affected by it. Their grief became his grief. Still, he did not glorify this pain or treat a painful meeting as spiritually desirable. The goal of apostolic care was not to make people miserable but to bring them back into truth, fellowship, and joy.

Christian love sometimes speaks immediately, and sometimes it waits. In either case, the question is not, “How can I protect myself?” but, “What will genuinely serve the other person before God?” Paul’s changed plan arose from that kind of concern. His authority did not need to prove itself by inflicting pain. It was willing to be patient so that correction might eventually lead to peace.
