Paul’s claim that believers possess the mind of Christ is followed by a painful qualification: when he was in Corinth, he could not address them as people consistently governed by the Spirit. He spoke to them as “carnal,” as infants in Christ. Their belonging to Christ was real; their patterns of thought still resembled the surrounding age.

The address “brethren” matters. Paul rebukes them from within a relationship created by Christ, not as an outsider declaring them unbelievers. “In Christ” remains the controlling description even while “carnal” describes their present behavior.

The contrast also prevents a two-tier Christianity in which a spiritual elite possesses salvation unavailable to ordinary believers. There is one life in Christ, meant to mature under the Spirit. The categories diagnose how believers are living; they are not permanent castes.

“Carnal” here does not make the physical body evil. Paul uses flesh-language for life directed by self-interest rather than by God’s Spirit. The evidence will be jealousy and factionalism, not embodiment.

The phrase “babes in Christ” combines rebuke with hope. Infancy is appropriate at the beginning and tragic when embraced as a permanent identity. Paul does not deny them a place in Christ, but he refuses to call giftedness maturity. Growth means allowing the cross to reorder loyalties, ambitions, and relationships.
