Paul recalls his first arrival in Corinth. He did not present God’s testimony with the cultivated display expected from a traveling lecturer or public orator. The point is not that his sentences were confused or his reasoning careless. Acts portrays him arguing in the synagogue and persuading hearers. What he renounced was speech designed to make the messenger, rather than the message, the object of admiration.

The expression “excellency of speech” can describe elevated or superior discourse. Paul’s refusal should be read alongside the substance of his letter: he uses irony, analogy, quotation, and tightly connected reasoning. He has not abandoned rhetoric in the broad sense; he has refused the conventions by which a speaker advertised social distinction.

Corinth stood within a culture of public performance where trained speakers could attract pupils and patrons. A new congregation tempted to compare Paul with the more eloquent Apollos needed to remember how it had actually begun. The founder arrived as a working missionary bearing testimony, not as a professional sage gathering a school around his person.

The phrase “testimony of God” names something entrusted to him. Paul came as a witness, not an inventor selling a private philosophy. That posture suited the gospel’s content: a crucified Messiah cannot be announced faithfully through a performance built around the preacher’s status.

Corinth knew public competitions in rhetoric and the social influence eloquence could bring. Paul would not let those habits determine the church’s birth. He spoke intelligibly and earnestly, but his authority rested in what God had done in Christ.
