Having denied that leaders own the church, Paul explains how they should be regarded: “ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.” A steward managed resources that belonged to a household master. The role carried trust and responsibility, but never ownership.

The first term, hyperētas, originally referred to an assistant or subordinate and came to describe one who acts under another’s direction. The second, oikonomos, names a household manager entrusted with administration. Together they define authority as delegated service.

God’s “mysteries” have been publicly revealed in the apostolic gospel, but they remain God’s property. A steward cannot alter the household’s message to suit the guests. The combination of lowly service and weighty trust explains why Christian leadership should be neither idolized nor treated casually.

“Mysteries” refers to God’s saving purpose now revealed in Christ, especially the wisdom of the cross. Paul and other teachers administer that revelation by proclaiming and embodying it; they are not keepers of secret knowledge for a favored circle.

The “mysteries” entrusted to stewards include truths that overturn the steward’s own status. A minister announces a crucified Lord and thereby announces the limits of ministerial power. When leaders treat the gospel as intellectual property, conceal it behind special access, or make loyalty to themselves the price of belonging, they betray both the trust and its content.

“Let a man so account of us” asks for a measured estimate. Paul has just said all leaders belong to the church as gifts, and now says they serve Christ as stewards. Both truths prevent possession: ministers cannot own members, and members cannot own ministers as representatives of a faction. Each belongs first to the Lord’s purpose.

This estimate avoids both celebrity and contempt. Christian ministers are servants, yet the message entrusted to them is precious. They deserve attention insofar as they handle their Master’s word faithfully.
