The opening command grows directly out of the closing words of the previous chapter. Love is not one spiritual gift among many; it is the way in which every gift must be desired and exercised. Paul therefore tells the Corinthians to “pursue love.” The word suggests deliberate, persistent movement. Love is not merely a warm feeling that may appear during worship. It is the settled commitment to seek another person’s good, to refuse self-display, and to use whatever God gives for the strengthening of His people.

Pursuing love does not require indifference toward spiritual gifts. Paul also tells believers to desire them earnestly. The answer to disorder is not to suppress everything spiritual until worship becomes lifeless. God gives gifts to His church, and His people should welcome His work with gratitude. Yet desire itself must be purified. The question is not, “Which gift will make me appear most spiritual?” but, “Which gift will most clearly serve those gathered?”

That is why prophecy receives special emphasis. In this chapter prophecy is Spirit-given, intelligible speech that communicates truth to the congregation. It may bring instruction, conviction, encouragement, or comfort, but it is not exempt from evaluation. Paul will later require prophetic messages to be weighed. Its priority in public worship comes not from the greatness of the speaker but from its ability to be understood.

The Corinthians had been fascinated by visible expressions of spirituality. Paul redirects that eagerness without extinguishing it. Seek the Spirit’s gifts, he says, but pursue love first and through them all. Spiritual vitality and loving order are not enemies. The Spirit who distributes gifts is the Spirit who forms one body, and the gifts fulfill their purpose when they draw attention away from the gifted person and toward the truth, grace, and strengthening God intends for His church.
