If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. Paul begins with the most dramatic possibility imaginable and then empties it of worth without love. Even if speech rose to the highest pitch, whether human or angelic, it would become mere sound divorced from spiritual substance.

The image is devastating. Noise can be loud, memorable, and even impressive for a moment, yet it does not nourish. Love is what turns gifted speech into ministry rather than commotion. Without it, something that looks spiritual may in fact be hollow. Corinth, impressed by remarkable utterance, needs to hear that.

There is a searching application here for every speaking gift, not only tongues. Preaching, teaching, counseling, praying, and testimony may all become clangor when love is absent. Words can be correct and still cold, powerful and still vain. The church needs not merely speech but speech saturated with patient concern for others. Love gives voice its true music.

The phrase "tongues of men and of angels" is a sweeping hypothetical that matches Paul's later "all mysteries," "all knowledge," and faith that moves mountains. It magnifies the argument; it does not define a separate angelic prayer language for believers. In the surrounding chapters tongues are meaningful human languages, and without love even the most remarkable speech becomes empty noise.
