Paul turns to spiritual gifts and says he does not want them to be uninformed. Ignorance about spiritual things is dangerous because it easily mistakes intensity for truth, excitement for holiness, and giftedness for maturity. Corinth seems especially vulnerable to that confusion. They prize what looks impressive, but Paul wants understanding shaped by Christ.

The phrase may also carry the sense of “spiritual matters” more broadly, not only isolated gifts. If so, Paul is saying that the whole way they think about spiritual life needs correction. That fits the chapter well. He is not merely cataloging abilities. He is teaching what the Spirit is for, how the Spirit works, and what truly marks a spiritual person.

This is a pastoral kindness. God does not want his church left in vague fascination. The Spirit is not given to produce mystery without truth. He leads believers into clear confession, ordered service, mutual dependence, and love. The Corinthians need instruction because “spirituality” can be faked, distorted, or turned into a hierarchy of prestige. Paul calls the church to thoughtful spirituality. We should seek the Spirit eagerly, but not carelessly. Enthusiasm without discernment is not holiness. The Holy Spirit does not fear understanding; he creates it. Churches grow healthier when they stop using the word “spiritual” as a shield against examination and start learning from Scripture what the Spirit actually delights to do among Christ’s people.

The needed instruction comes from the apostolic Word, not from intensity alone. Spiritual claims must be tested by their confession of Christ, harmony with Scripture, moral fruit, and service to the body. Openness to the Spirit and careful biblical discernment belong together.
