Paul now turns to the question of food offered to idols, a matter the Corinthians had apparently raised with him. The statement “we all have knowledge” may reflect something certain members of the congregation were saying about themselves, although Paul can also use the wording as a point of agreement before correcting the way their knowledge was being applied. They understood an important truth: an idol has no genuine divine existence, and food does not acquire the power of a god merely because it has been associated with worship. Their conclusion contained truth, but truth alone had not made their conduct loving.

“Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” does not make knowledge the enemy. Paul values truth, understanding, and careful instruction. The church cannot grow by remaining uninformed, and love without truth can become confused or harmful. His concern is knowledge separated from humility and responsibility. Knowledge can become a source of self-importance when a person uses correct information to feel superior to believers who have not yet reached the same understanding.

To be “puffed up” is to become enlarged in one’s own estimation without becoming stronger in Christian character. A person may know the right answer and still use it wrongly. The knowledgeable Corinthians were asking whether they had the right to eat. Paul asks what their use of that right was doing to another believer. Their theology about idols needed to be joined to love for the people whose past had made this issue spiritually dangerous.

In Roman Corinth this question was woven into ordinary public life. Sacrifices supplied meals in sanctuary dining rooms, portions for hosts and priests, and meat that could later enter the market. Invitations could also carry obligations of friendship, business, and patronage. Paul is therefore addressing more than a private food preference: he is teaching believers how loyalty to Christ reshapes social belonging in an idolatrous city. Corinthian archaeology has uncovered dedicated dining spaces in local sanctuaries, making the pressure behind the question concrete without requiring us to identify one particular shrine as the setting of every meal.

Things offered unto idols — εἰδωλοθύτων (eidōlothytōn)

Food associated with a sacrifice to an idol. Depending on the setting, it could be eaten in a sanctuary banquet, sold later as ordinary merchandise, or served in a private home. Paul distinguishes those settings rather than treating the food as magically altered.
