Paul introduces the collection by speaking of “the grace of God” given to the churches of Macedonia. Their generosity is first God’s work among them, not a display of unusual moral strength. Grace has altered the way these congregations regard possessions and the needs of believers far away.

Calling generosity grace establishes the order of the whole appeal. The Macedonians did not purchase acceptance or blessing through their contribution. Having received God’s kindness in Christ, they began to hold their resources with open hands. Giving became one fruit of salvation.

Paul also speaks of churches in the plural. This response was not confined to one wealthy patron; congregations participated according to differing means. Their example prepares the Corinthians to complete their own promise without turning the collection into a contest between provinces. The point is what God’s grace can produce in a community that yields itself to him.
